International Education Week

International Education Week (IEW) is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of State. Inaugurated by President Bill Clinton in 2000, IEW celebrates the importance and benefits of international education in the U.S. and around the world. Today, IEW is celebrated in more than 100 countries worldwide. Learn more about International Education Week at: http://iew.state.gov/.

Since its inception in 2000, IEW has helped to showcase international education and foster intercultural understanding. These are pillars of our educational mission at Northeastern and here in SF and Silicon Valley, and we are proud to bring International Education Week to our Bay Area campuses this year in 2021, on the 21st anniversary of this celebration. Now more than ever, in the face of global health concerns, travel restrictions, and growing divisiveness, we must come together.

Let us celebrate the importance of international education and the global ties shared by Northeastern SF and Silicon Valley students, staff, and alumni around the world. We encourage members of the Northeastern community to participate in our virtual events.

The Open Doors report is a definitive survey on international and U.S. higher education student mobility. The briefing offers the public and members of the media access to the newest data available from the annual ECA-funded Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange, published by the Institute of International Education (IIE). Report highlights will include survey results on international and U.S. student mobility, the top sending and receiving countries, and statistics on student demographics. Advocacy with NAFSA

NAFSA: Association of International Educators is the world’s largest nonprofit association dedicated to international education and exchange. Its nearly 10,000 members worldwide believe that international education—connecting students, scholars, educators, and citizens across borders—is fundamental to advancing peace, security, and well-being. Many of your Northeastern staff (Giscard, Jackie, the OGS team) are active members of NAFSA! You can learn more about NAFSA’s Advocacy efforts for international students and scholars here.

In addition to advocating in DC and locally, and spearheading leading research on international education, NAFSA also conducts an analysis on the economic impact of international students in the US. NAFSA’s latest analysis finds that international students studying at U.S. colleges and universities contributed $41 billion and supported 458,290 jobs to the U.S. economy during the 2018-2019 academic year! This data draws on Open Doors, and you can find state by state breakdowns here. You can also read the individual stories of international students in the US. Thank you for being a part of our community and #youarewelcomehere.
