Title: Introduction to Quantum Computing
Speaker: Prof. Oscar Veliz
Oscar Veliz is an Assistant Teaching Professor at Northeastern University – Seattle campus and he earned his PhD in Computer Science from The University of Texas at El Paso. His dissertation in Artificial Intelligence focused on game theoretic models of reasoning under uncertainty in large games and he received the Google CAHSI Dissertation Award. Oscar was a Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow at Carnegie Mellon University before joining Northeastern. He has worked for ExxonMobil, Hewlett-Packard, and Microsoft; and is also a longtime high school CS educator with the Microsoft TEALS Program.
Abstract: This talk delves into the world of using Quantum Mechanics to solve problems in Computer Science. Participants gain an understanding of qubits, learn about programming on a real quantum computer, and explore the kinds of problems that can and can’t be solved on a quantum computer. The goal is to make Quantum Computing accessible and assumes no prior background in the subject, while also engaging in a hands-on activity to help foster a deeper understanding of the topic, in what will hopefully become a course offered by Khoury.
